~ ~ ~ ~ One - Three Hundred- Eight Eight - Two Five Two Five ~ ~ ~ ~ <> ~~~ PIZZA HUT Delivery ~~~~~
Yup, we went to Pizza Hut for my Farewell..
Not really mine,
but together with another 2 trainees
from USM who are leaving next Friday,
We celebrated together.
There were 16 of us, everyone from Failure Analysis & Reliability Lab.
Just a quick farewell, not much time for the “HOO HAA HOO HAA” enjoyment, as its our Friday lunch time, only one hour duration.
Althou its just ONE hour, I spend more of the time walking around the table snapping pictures with my fellow colleagues..

The Supervisor and The Trainees... On the left, Mr. Yeoh Lai Seng, me and the curly hair Chien's supervisor.. On the right, Mr. Jason Ng, the right most girl, Yu Xuan's supervisor...

~~ OH NO..oh no....

GREAT~!!.. socket is here.. but no one knows how to function it… TO achieve your final aim.. u always need to fulfill all contributing factors.. Doing ATE test doesn’t sounds POSITIVE…. Still waiting for the engineers to discover how to use.. mean time also waiting reply from the engineer in US.. Hope to hear GOOD NEWS..

BUT…, only 3 days left….. Mon – Weds….

Miracle happens?? Hmm.. I hope so…

~ Story of a SOCKET...----> Extend ~

Everyone is happy posting , counting down the days left, hours to go on their last day which is today, 25th June, announcing their 12 weeks of Industrial Training finally ended !! in facebook, congratulating each other through SMS, thinking and planning their celebration venue and activity.
I do not share the same feelings as them Because… I AM EXTENDING MY TRAINING til next WEDS.. Do not take me wrong from the expression of the sentence above. I do not mind to extend my training, cause my intention is to learn something extra on my project.
My supervisor wanted to do ATE test on WLCSP, the package unit of my project as a further studies. In production mode, electrical testing is usually performed using a test system. Such a test system is referred to as an automatic (or automated) test equipment, or ATE. The tester performs the electrical testing itself using testing process executed by the tester is controlled by the test program or test software.
So, my supervisor went to ask the Product Engineer to teach me on how to conduct this test. Unfortunately, he told him that they only perform test on wafer form packages but not singulated unit. Hence, my supervisor went to find for testing socket of WLCSP for singulated package. Guess the source where he finally found the socket…??? Its from US !! Wow! So that engineer posted the socket to FAIRCHILD PENANG all the way from US.. Just for my project.. wah.. so honored.. so lucky..
Now it’s the problem of worrying the parcel wont be able to reach here before I end my training.. Parcel from US.. how long that suppose to take? One more week and my training ends… On 22nd June, Tues afternoon, 4 days before my training.. a DHL parcel arrived in Q&R lab…attention to my supervisor, MR LS Yeoh… Is it the WLCSP socket from US? Hmm.. Unwrapping the parcel with curiousity….. aaannndd… YUP, IT IS ! COOL.. I am gonna start on ATE test.. More knowledge on new device.. new process…
SO.. this was why I decided to extend my training.. Isnt it cool that u as a trainee get to learn how to use a device that we do not have in Penang branch.. and needed to lend it from US Headquater? What a opportunity I thought.. So, I extended.

~ The Countdown ~

Everybody posting this in their facebook status recently “ Counting down the remaining days”, “ one more week to go.”.. Everyone is so excited that internship is soon towards the end. Of course, I feel a bit excited about that too.. haha.. I still remember the first week when I first got in my company.. all alone.. knowing nobody in there.. I feel so helpless.. Cnt wait to get out of this place.. full of strangers…
Slowly, get to know ppl around, made new friends., used to waking up, go to work, used to the working environment here.. when things settled down and caught in hand.. its time to say BYE again. No wonder people say 3 months duration for internship is short. I first thought 3 months is long but know I know why its short. Finally, times flies. One more week to go, and internship END.
Today, I have a different thought in my mind. I told myself.. “You like living a student’s life compared to an adult’s working life… but in future.. you will like a trainee’s working life than a permanent employee’s working life, less pressure and responsibilities” So, I will appreciate the remaining days of my internship in Fairchild, gain as much knowledge and experience as I can.. to make use of my internship to the maximum. I am very gladfull people in my work place is friendly, nice, willing to teach and share their knowledge with me.

~ The Line Tour ~

As promised by our Department Head... we trainee got the opportunity to tour down at the production line for us to understand the process of IC packaging. Lucky for me, as it expose me to something out from my project. My project is related to solder bump package and this tour is related to wire bond package. Internship is not about jus completing your project but also some exposure to the industrial. Thats the purpose of internship.
As i know quite a number of people in my batch joined the semiconductor company... Freescale, Infineon,.... and mine - Fairchild. At least, my housemates and I are in semiconductor company for our internship.
I learned and read about the process in slides during my first week of my internship, but I didnt understand well until I went for this tour. Before going in the production floor, the strictly no ESD area, we put on this "bunny suit", booties, and face mask.
The overall process of semicondutor production is as below :
Wafer Fabrication -> Wafer sort -> Dicing -> Die attach -> Wire Bonding -> Molding -> Deflash -> Plating -> Trim & Form -> Testing -> Mark -> Tape & Reel - Boxstock
Interesting and beneficial tour around my company... will jot down in logbook..

~ Curve Tracing ~

Figure on left is the Curve Trace probing station.
Figure on right is the Curve Trace graph viewer.
OKOK. whats next?? CURVE TRACE IS UP NEXT. After finish doing cross section, I proceed with part II of my project. I continued with Curve Tracing. This is to probe the unit sample pin to pin curve tracing to obtain the I-V curve characteristic.

I have to do curve trace on good unit samples and also units which has undergo stress. After that, I will compare the stress unit’s graph to the good unit’s graph to determine which pin has failure.

With such a small unit… 1.0mm x 1.5mm… on the unit, there are 6 solder bumps. This unit call WLCSP, does not use wire bonding for connection instead it uses solder bump to connect to external circuitries. So, I will have to probe pin 1,2,3,5 and 6 with respect to GND and save the graph obtain. TINY TINY little solder bumps on the unit, FINE FINE little probing needles… My eyes see stars…. Again, patience...

But once I get the catch of it.. I am on track… Interesting task.. but I am stil looking forward to understand those characteristics of the graphs for each pin to pin… When is it early breakdown… when is it leakage current.. when it is normal… Hmm..

~ The farewell...

WOW wow wow.. IT had been a long time since I last online.. meaning the last post I upload in my IT blog was ages ago.. Many thing going on in my internship, but never get the chance to share about in here..

Alright I shall start with “farewell” cross section… As you can see the picture above, it’s me grinding the very last unit for this internship project. Wearing glove, putting on the surgical mask.. suppose have to put on safety goggle as well...
When I first started my project, I been doing this grinding and polishing everyday.. repeating the same procedure.. I got BORED doing it.. FED UP doing it… I just cant wait to complete this cross sectional part of my project. Until that day, fianlly, I am doing on the last unit sample, I appreciated every single moment doing the last sample unit of my project, and I find it actually quite fun.
It's just the philosophy of appreciate and enjoy at that current moment else when it becomes a past a history.. Its hard to turn back the time...

~ Lecturer's Visit ~

On my right, it is Mr.Kannan M. Munisanry, Senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, my internship visiting supervisor; On my left, it is Mr.Yeoh Lai Seng, ( they actually try to start addressing him Dr.Yeoh ..Hehe ), Failure Analysis & Reliability Engineer, my supervisor in Fairchild Semiconductor Penang. And lastly, the little girl in the centre, obviously IT’S ME, the trainee !!

14th May 2010, 9.30am, it’s my lecturer’s visit to Fairchild Semiconductor Penang ( FSPM ). Yup, it was a week ago. This blog entry is only posted today because I was waiting for the pictures from the human resource person in charge because these pictures was taken using Fairchild’s digital camera.

Lecturer visit on Friday.. I knew it only on Wednesday night.. Ooh ooh.. On Thursday, I was thinking what am I suppose to do during the visit? I was planning on the explaination and tour around my work place, the Q&R lab. What am I suppose to present? What questions will he ask me?.. Until in the afternoon, I was told that the meeting will be in one of the meeting room in Learning Centre because we are not allowed to bring in non-employee into the production area. Ooo, so that be just a casual meet up between me, my lecturer and my supervisor.

Mr.Kannan is a very friendly and nice person. Mr.Kannan is a lectuer under the Department of Mechanical Engineering. At first, when I thought students are suppose to present about their internship project to their lecturer during the visit, I was so nervous and wondering who is Mr.Kannan. Non my friends knows who he is. The visit and the conversation went on smooth. We had a nice talk about what I do in my internship, my supervisor and my lecturer had a good time giving opinions and exchanging information.

Lecturer’s visit indicating that the internship we trainee undergoing is almost towards the end… Its week 7 now.. 5 more weeks to go… I feel like finishing internship quickly went I first started internship here. But now I feel..I must appreciate the remaining weeks enjoying my internship with my colleagues here and gaining knowledge and exposures…

~ Bit of Journal..journal? ~

All these weeks, I hardly update the progress of what I do in my internship beside the introduction part of my project at the beginning. This was because I basically repeat the same process on the same unit package of different stress.

But today I have a different feeling about doing what I do everyday... FINALLY today its the last unit I'll be doing Cross Section .. Not that I do not enjoy doing it, but it challenge my patience so much.. After this, I'll be doing on Curve Tracer, getting the I-V graph plot which I do not know much about this equipment yet as I am not taught on it yet.

Normally, I spend 30mins on polishing the unit.. but today.. I spend 3 hours !! I got the surface of the unit smooth but got scratched at the final stage.. Fine, I redo the previous step.... Then I see contamination on the unit again.. I tried to polish it to be cleaner... but I got it scratched again... again n again.. I got fed up ... But I chill myself down... Til 3hours later, I finally got a satisfied result.. and I stop to polish for a better result.. afraid that I might scratched it and redo all the steps again...

INTERSHIP PROJECT PART 1
ACCOMPLISHED!
YEAH !

~ RUN FOR YOUR LIFE ~

RUN ! RUN ! RUN !
RUN FOR YOUR LIFE !
Leave your things behind,
Run to the assembly area,
Everyone gather there immediately ! ...

LOL.. that's exaggerated by me..
We had Fire Drill Practice last week..

I was informed by my trainer to get ready.. fire drill practice at 850am. Everyone got ready 5minutes before but when the emergency bell rang at 850am, it didn't alert me because it more like a tea break melody bell than an emergency siren.

We were told not to take off our smock and booties...just wear what you are wearing out to the assembly area... BUT.. me n other 2 trainees from my dept realize that we are the only 3 people wearing smock n booties... although we are not doing anything wrong.. but somehow I felt myself so embarrassing at that moment and quickly took off my smock n booties...

I was expecting it too be a long assembly... but it only lasted for 5mins and everyone went back to own work place. Maybe my thinking was a little bit influenced by Uniten's system.. Hehe.. Where electricity supply is cut off, then we "Murnians" slowly go down to the car park to gather, then everyone stand there chit chating, then the floor leader take our attendee, then the residence n the Hostel committees check the percentage of attendance for each Block. All in all roughly 45mins? Hehe...

~ Changing Paradigms To Improve ~

Today, I attended a two hours training session with the title “ Changing Paradigms to Improve Results” facilitated by Debra Schuler under Fairchild Corporate Learning and Development. I find it beneficial and would like to share with everyone. Its very meaningful, hope you will continue to read this post....

This training’s learning objectives is to understand how mindset directly affects behavior and outcomes. Looking at ‘The Chain Reaction” , also called as the “ SEE, DO, GET” model. To ‘SEE’ its our paradigm, it’s the way we see, understand and interpret the world, its our mental map. To ‘DO’, is our behavior, how we react or what action we take after we understand and interpret the world. Last but not least, to ‘GET’ which is the result, the outcome.

We are actually free to choose and at the same time responsible for the choice we made. Actually to interpret a incident or message that a person wanted to convey is also very important. In this training, they called it “ Mastering Our Stories”, its about how you tell yourself a more accurate story.

One good example is
“ In a meeting, the boss said to his employee “ I shall agree with any decision
you guys decided, that’s all for today’s meeting.” All the employee stand up
and walk out the meeting room but having different interpret of their own in
their mind. Employee A thought “ GREAT, we can do anything we think is best,
and the boss will agree with anything, COOL ! We better give in

our best effort." Employee B thought “YEAH, we make the decision, and if there’s
anything to be wrong, we be the person to be blame for any damage and loss”

On top of that, we are also encourage to be a PROACTIVE person rather than a REACTIVE person. A reactive person will say “ I HAVE TO…. ELSE I WILL BE…..” BUT on the other hand, A proactive person will always tell themselve “ I AM GOING TO…….” Or “ I CHOOSE TO…..”. A reactive person response based on outside influence, they focus on things which they cannot control while a proactive person response based on principles and desired results which they are able to control. From here we can see that language also plays a vital role. For an example of an reactive statement : ‘I am the product of my circumstances.” & a proactive statement : ‘ I am the product of my choice.’

From this training, I learn that mindset is very important to step into success. Of course, to have this practice its not something we can achieve in a day but it needs a prolong period. I am working on this… What a beneficial training we had today….

~ Grinding - Grinding - Grinding - Grinding - Grinding - Grinding - Grinding ~
~ Polishing - Polishing - Polishing - Polishing - Polishing - Polishing ~
~ Cross Section - Cross Section - Cross Section - Cross Section - Cross Section ~

First, is to practice n practice… proverb says.. < Practice Makes Prefect >… True? False? Maybe True . Now, from today onwards I be starting on Actual Units.. Need to handle with care, keep reminding myself not to spoil or break these units.. SMALL - TINY - MINI fragile units…

Basically, my job scope is quite specific.. So “specific” that I be doing the same thing for maybe one month; same process EVERYDAY… Is this call “PENGKHUSUSAN” that we learn in KH ? LOLX>> Doing it everyday is ONE thing… Doing it with PATIENCE and CAREFULLY is another thing… Chinese proverb says “ 铁磨成针”… (=> meaning to now grind a metal rod until it becomes a needle ) After 2 weeks of training … I understand the meaning WELL…

Today those “Boss Boss Boss” are in my department, the Quality & Reliability Lab. HaHa…When the boss is around, everyone seems to be so discipline.. Make sure that we do not make mistake or violate the rules.. Put on the ESD ( Electrostatic Discharge ) equipments ; PPE ( Personal Protection Equipment )Including me.. I was so afraid when he stood beside me and look at me doing my work. However, after he start to talk to me “ Are you new here?” .. “Yup, I am the new trainee in this department from UNITEN”.. We start to chit chat a while.. He is actually quite friendly to talk to.

He promised to bring me and other trainee around the factory to understand better about the production of the company. At least, we are not stuck in the SAME place the whole internship duration.. Else, ITS BOooRIiiNnnG !!

¬ LET'S GET IT STARTED ; LET'S GET IT ROLLING ¬

Finally, my briefing ended today. Today for the first time I enter the place I am suppose to work, Failure Analysis Lab under Quality & Reliability Department.

My supervisor introduced me to all the staffs in the lab and brief me on each function of the machines and devices . Being expose to those machines, it was like ‘WOW, Engineering ROCKS..!!’ Hehe..

I started on the first procedure of my individual project today. I put in 30 WLCSP ( Wafer Level Chip Scale Package ) into the oven to stress it. These die are very tiny that I need to inspect it under a very high power microscope. More to learn tomorrow on grinding, polishing, I-V curve tracer…

But one thing, we are not allowed to snap pictures inside the company plant !! Gosh ! What I have to attach in my report and presentation later?? It can’t be all words…. If use curi snap.. I am too timid to do that, what if I got caught and terminated? OH NO ! I don’t want to retain one year….. Hope I will get the permit to snap some pictures for my report purpose.. <-@-@->.

¬ First Day of Internship ¬

Final Exam Ended, Internship Started.

7.30 in the morning on 5th April Monday, I got out from my aunty’s car and off she left me alone at the main gate after making a U-turn. ‘Hey, aren’t you gonna accompany me until the HR person in charge pick me up from the guardhouse??’ She wind down the window and said ‘You can handle it yourself.’

With a helpless look on my face, I look at her car driven away further n further from me. Hmmm, I took a deep breath and walk towards the guard house.

How’s the working environment and working culture in this company? Are the people there nice and friendly? Question marks start to pop in my mind.

Basically, the first two and half days I went for so called orientation and briefing. Not many people attending this briefing, there are only less than 10 of us AND I am the ONLY trainee ! ALONE ! OOOoooo.. (T-T).. I don’t like to be alone..

Back home at night, I get to know from facebook post that many people spent their first day waiting too but only gone through very short briefing. Perhaps each company has different ways of doing things.

These two days we are expose to general knowledge on how to protect components from damage, individual safety and company rules and regulations. We are also given short questionnaires to test on our understanding too.
